Teachers told: Don't let bully heads intimidate you

Strikers face propaganda drive on return to work

Teachers have been advised not to be intimidated by union-busting head teachers who have made lists of striking staff and handed them to parents.

The Star reported last week that many teachers defied disciplinary threats to take part in strikes over damaging Tory changes to pay and pensions.

NASUWT deputy leader Patrick Roach praised teachers for turning out in large numbers despite being "leaned on" by bosses, who could soon have power to set pay.

More teachers and parents have since come forward to lift the lid on their head teachers' attempts to scupper strike action.

One teacher explained their school's head "wrote to parents to say these teachers care about the education of your kids and these don't!"

The example was exposed anonymously by the Teacher Roar campaign because its source was terrified of retaliation.

And teacher Cathy Shakespeare said: "Our head sent letters to parents of each class where the teachers were striking, that way letting parents know exactly who it was."

Parent Brian Munro said at his kids' school they provided a list of those classes on strike and those not.

"But as a parent I ignore this list anyway and keep my kids away."

National Union of Teachers general secretary Christine Blower has now warned members about the tactics.

She said: "Individual teachers do not have to tell the head they are striking - the union has given all the legal notices required.

"Don't be intimidated. Join the action and join the fight to defend teachers."
