Welsh NHS workers win improved pay deal

But Hunt still refusing to talk to English staff

Health workers in Wales won an improved pay deal yesterday - but Tory Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt still refuses to talk to English staff.

Welsh Health Minister Mark Drakeford hailed "an excellent example of working collaboratively" after agreeing the undisclosed two-year deal.

"The settlement is an improvement on the previous offer and we welcome achieving the living wage for our lowest-paid members," said Unison Cymru head of health Dawn Bowden.

The deal means Welsh workers will not join a massive strike by health workers in England on Monday.

Westminster Health Secretary Mr Hunt did not accept a recommendation to give staff even a 1 per cent pay rise.

"He is cowering behind a Berlin Wall of intransigence," said Unite head of health Rachael Maskell.

"The contrast in the attitude between the financially challenged Welsh government and the hard line adopted by Hunt could not be greater."
