LIBERAL Democrat leader Sir Vince Cable was accused of staggering hypocrisy yesterday after he hit out at so-called Brexit “martyrs” for “shafting youngsters.”
In his Mail on Sunday column, the former Con-Dem business secretary blamed older people for backing Britain’s exit from the European Union.
However, campaigners pointed to Mr Cable’s record in the coalition government, which raised university tuition fees and scrapped the education maintenance allowance that helped young people in further education with travel costs and course materials.
The rise in fees will leave students from the poorest backgrounds with a staggering £57,000 debt on leaving university, according to figures published last month.
Communist Party general secretary Rob Griffiths accused Mr Cable of “ageist stereotyping” and said people had voted to leave the EU to see “elected British governments take the vital political and economic decisions in our society.”
Mr Griffiths added: “He served in the Tory-led cabinet that hiked up tuition fees. Vince Cable certainly knows about shafting young people.”
