China: Teenager admits to axe attack

CHINESE state TV showed 19-year-old Uighur Mu’er Zhati confessing today to a three-man axe attack on a mahjong games room in the Xinjiang city of Hotan last weekend.

He said that his two accomplices had been killed when players fought back with chairs and local people armed with sticks beat them before security forces arrived.

Four civilians were wounded in the fighting, which was the latest in a spate of attacks by extremists on civilians.

Police said that the attackers had been influenced by watching overseas religious extremist videos.

Mr Mu’er reported being told that, if he died carrying out jihad, he would enter heaven directly.

He apologised, pledging not to do anything similar if he gets out of detention and to take care of his parents at home.

Police in Kashgar in Xinjiang province shot dead 13 assailants on Saturday after they rammed a lorry into a police station and detonated explosives.
