Fulham 1 Cardiff City 2: Martin Jol tells boo-boys not to expect too much

Luke James reports from Craven Cottage

Martin Jol issued a reality check to Fulham supporters angry after watching their side surrender three points to Cardiff at Craven Cottage.

The Welsh club were ahead on 11 minutes when Steven Caulker headed home a Peter Whittingham corner, and only an acrobatic save by David Stockdale and a goalline clearance from Steve Sidwell stopped Cardiff converting more ariel dominance.

Panicked Jol rolled the dice by swapping winger Alex Kacaniklic for David Ruiz before half-time.

The gamble paid off when Ruiz curled a shot passed David Marshall on the stroke of half-time.

Both sides maintained a high-stakes effort to snatch all three points in the second-half. And Jordan Mutch earned Cardiff their first Premier League away win on the road with a left-footed drive deep in injury time.

Fulham boss Jol accepted responsibility for the boos that rang out around Craven Cottage at full-time time. He rued poor defending and admitted “we have to win these games.”

But Jol said: “I hate it when people get angry — especially when they call for the manager’s head.

“If we are bottom of the table at the end of the season it’s not about me because I won’t be here. Fulham is not a club that should be in the top six every season.”
