Syria's Western-backed rebels warn al-Nusra Front massing to destroy supply line

PRO-WESTERN rebel groups sounded the alarm yesterday over the massing of al-Nusra Front militants near the Bab al-Hawa border into Turkey.

The move by al-Nusra forces follows its overrunning of towns and villages held by Western-backed groups in Syria’s north-western Idlib province.

It appears that the front is intent on controlling a key cross-border supply line along which the pro-Western groups receive arms and reinforcements.

Al-Nusra fighters are now ensconced in Sarmada, just four miles from Bab al-Hawa.

Rami Abdurrahman of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that al-Nusra fighters were gathering in Sarmada but there was no indication of an advance on the crossing.

Bab al-Hawa crossing is currently held by the Islamic Front alliance.

Recent advances by al-Nusra Front forces represent a sharp blow for the Western-backed Syrian Revolutionaries Front, headed by Jamal Maarouf, and Harakat Hazm, a group armed and funded by the US.
