London Underground workers could strike on bank holiday

LONDON Underground could be closed over the bank holiday weekend as workers take action over a “botched” attempt to cut pay and jobs, Tube unions announced yesterday.

Technicians represented by Unite, TSSA and RMT have voted to strike.

The 40 workers are based in the Tube’s power control room at Blackfriars station and operate the network’s energy grid, powering trains, the track, signalling and escalators.

RMT assistant general secretary Mick Cash said the dispute was the result of a “botched” private finance initiative that saw workers transfered to a privateer and then back in house — but with worse conditions.

Unite regional officer Hugh Roberts added: “London Underground management’s penny-pinching attitude is not being driven by common sense, but by the background agenda of budget cuts in the Treasury’s funding.”

The Tube will be completely closed if management don’t make an agreement with unions during talks at conciliation service Acas.

RMT members also announced bank holiday walkouts on the Heathrow Express service yesterday.

Workers will mount a second 48-hour strike in response to an “all-out assault on pay, jobs and safety” on the service.
