Norwich 0 Charlton Athletic 1: Addicks end Canaries’ unbeaten home run

Late goal from Johnnie Jackson enough for Charlton to grab first away win, writes Michael McCann at Carrow Road

A late goal from visiting captain Johnnie Jackson was enough for Charlton Athletic to abruptly end Norwich’s unbeaten home run on Tuesday night.

A deflected long-range shot from Jackson in the 85th minute made it 1-0, securing the Addicks’ first away win of the campaign, while Norwich conceded an eight match unbeaten streak in the League.

Norwich were the top scorers in the division but struggled to find a finish to match their control of the game, as an organised Charlton side remained undefeated in the Championship this season.

Within five minutes the rejuvenated Wesley Hoolahan created two shooting opportunities for Grabban, whose first effort forced a smart save from Stephen Henderson.

Russell Martin stabbed in from a corner towards the end of the half, but it was correctly ruled out for a foul by Bradley Johnson on Henderson.

Norwich dominated possession and territory but, unusually division leaders, failed to score in the opening half for the sixth successive game.

Unsurprisingly given their their recent performances, The Canaries began the second-half strongly, with a penalty appeal against Bikey turned down after good work by Grabban and Jerome.

Nathan Redmond was a constant threat, linking well with Stephen Whittaker to produce two good crosses that Jerome wastefully headed over. The England U-21 international had a placed shot saved by Henderson, with a goal line clearance from Lawrie Wilson denying Hoolahan from the rebound.

Charlton made themselves difficult to penetrate, with determined holding midfielder Yoni Buyens largely caging Hoolahan, arguably the division’s best playmaker. The Irishmen was able to occasionally able to break free, feeding Grabban again, who was denied by an excellent block from Bikey.

Substitute Jonny Howson made an immediate impact through a determined run before setting up Grabban, who could only curl a right-footed finish just wide.

Charlton had not significantly troubled John Ruddy before Jackson was given too much space to shoot from outside the box, though Ruddy may feel he should have done better.

Neither side came close to another goal, whilst full-time was marked Bradley Johnson and Morgan Fox instigating an undignified scuffle between both sets of players.

Norwich manager Neil Adams said that "the only thing we did wrong was not putting the ball in the back of the net, which we have been doing recently” and it appears hard to disagree.

However, credit must go to Charlton for defending resolutely and claiming a memorable away win through their captain marvel, Johnnie Jackson.
