At least 22 police officers were taken to hospital on Saturday after clashes with angry Syrian refugees at Jordan’s Zaatari refugee camp.
Security forces used tear gas to disperse stone-throwing camp members, who had set fire to tents and vehicles during the confrontation.
The camp, which houses over 100,000 refugees, has seen several protests over poor living conditions since opening two years ago.
Zaatari is located in the Jordanian desert about eight miles from the Syrian border.
It is the world’s second-largest refugee camp and has become the fourth largest city in Jordan.
Jordanian authorities said violence broke out after police arrested a group of refugees who were trying to leave the camp illegally.
“The rioters burned six tents and two caravans and tried to attack police stations,” the Public Security Directorate said.
But residents of Zaatari claimed the clashes had occurred because a Jordanian policeman had run over a Syrian child.
