News in Brief: 22/05/14

POST: Royal Mail workers welcomed a company plan to launch Sunday services yesterday.

Royal Mail has announced a pilot project for Sunday deliveries within the M25 around London. It will also open its 100 busiest enquiry offices in the area on Sundays.

Union CWU general secretary Dave Ward said: “Royal Mail’s announcement today about expanding delivery and collection services to seven-days-a-week is an exciting innovation which we welcome.”

ENVIRONMENT: The High Court upheld plans yesterday to cull thousands of seagulls.

A judge dismissed bird protection charity RSPB’s claim that the cull is unlawful and would set a dangerous precedent for bird conversation in Britain.

Mr Justice Mitting said the claims were “unfounded,” rejecting the application for a judicial review and ordering the RSPB to pay £10,000 in legal costs.

EDUCATION: The number of students who don’t think their courses are worth the extortionate tuition fees has almost doubled in the past two years.

About a third of students think their courses are poor value, compared with the 18 per cent who thought so before the Con-Dems jacked up fees from £3,000 to £9,000.
