HUMAN rights activists and sports groups called yesterday for South African Fifa official Tokyo Sexwale to resign from the football governing body’s committee on Israel and Palestine.
In a statement issued by the South African National Coalition for Palestine, the groups said that Fifa had dragged their feet when it came to taking action against the Israel Football Association for their breach of Fifa rules.
“Instead of acting, Fifa has continuously delayed and Sexwale is part of this delaying process. Sexwale and the Fifa Israel-Palestine monitoring committee was meant to deliver justice; instead, it is delaying justice.”
Palestinians have long complained to Fifa about Israeli attacks against Palestinian players including arrests and torture of Palestinian athletes, denial of freedom of movement and bombing of football stadiums.
The activists want Fifa’s Israel-Palestine committee to be scrapped and for the UN to add Fifa to a list of firms operating in the occupied territories.
