THREE activists were ordered to each pay £200 fines plus prosecution fees yesterday after blockading Heathrow airport.
Esme Waldron, 23, Alistair Cannell, 26, and William Pettifer, 27, from the group Plane Stupid blocked the entrance tunnel to Heathrow terminals for over four hours in November last year in protest against a third runway.
“For most of us, all we will gain from new runways is dirtier air, more noise and more floods due to climate chaos,” said Ms Waldron.
“Demand for airport expansion only comes from a minority of frequent leisure flyers.”
A solidarity demonstration outside Uxbridge magistrates’ court was joined by local residents and the Heathrow 13, who were given suspended jail sentences for blocking the airport’s runway last year.
“My constituents have been fighting against the threat of new runways at Heathrow for decades,” said shadow chancellor John McDonnell, whose Hayes and Harlington constituency covers Heathrow.
