White-collar staff fight zero-hours

WHITE-COLLAR workers demanded a crackdown on zero-hours contracts yesterday at specialists’ union Prospect national conference in Glasgow.

Delegate Chris Herdy said his own daughter worked for a restaurant chain on a zero-hours contract. Her manager had recently told her she would get no work while their restaurant closed for renovation.

“She’s got a family. The other half works, but on a low wage — so that’s five weeks off with no income for her family,” Mr Herdy said. “They need to be abolished.”

Conference voted narrowly to resist unwanted zero-hours contracts and press for “proper regulation.”
