Scottish government agencies take exception to partisan CBI stance on independence

Scottish government agencies have followed media group STV in quitting the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) after the bosses’ organisation backed the Better Together campaign last week.

The CBI registered with the Electoral Commission to allow spending of up to £150,000 on referendum campaigning in the regulated period from May 30 until September 18.

A spokesman for Holyrood said: “In these circumstances, it is clearly inappropriate for government agencies to remain in membership of CBI.”

In a statement STV said it was “a public service broadcaster with a duty of impartiality and as such we have no corporate or editorial position on the independence referendum in September.”

But the CBI hit back at critics: “While any member deciding to leave is a cause for regret, the CBI is confident we have a mandate from the vast majority of our membership on the question of Scottish independence.”
