MARK WILLIAMS rushed to visit his wife in hospital yesterday just hours after a dramatic win in the Northern Ireland Open.
The Welshman edged the final 9-8 against Yan Bingtao, winning the deciding frame 77-28 as an early break of 42 eventually proved decisive after his 17-year-old opponent could not make the most of his chance.
The two-time World Champion revealed he’d had a phone call shortly after Saturday’s 6-2 semi-final win over Elliot Slessor, telling him his wife Joanne had been taken to hospital.
He tweeted: “[Joanne] really going through it at the moment. Last thing I want is to pull out now but we will have to wait and see.”
Before the final session, Williams added: “One more session to go then home it is to be with the Mrs in hospital, perhaps where I should have been from the start.”
Williams eventually claimed the best-of-17-frames match for his 19th career title, the first since 2011.
