NUJ delegate meeting: Journalists reject boycott of 'big bully' Israel for jeopardising journalists at work

Delegates to the National Union of Journalists annual conference reject support for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement because it would put the work of journalists in the country at risk

Calls to boycott Israel were rejected by journalists yesterday as it would jeopardise their work in the country.

London magazine delegate Alan Simpson that said Israel was one of the “biggest bullies in the world” and called for the NUJ to support the Boycott, Disinvestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

It would have meant boycotting Israeli products.

But Leeds delegate Peter Lazenby said: “As northern reporter at the Morning Star I use every opportunity I get to cover the BDS movement and Palestinian Solidarity Campaign.

“But if the union supported the BDS campaign it would jeopardise those working in Israel.

“We cannot take this position without risking them.”

NUJ general secretary Michelle Stanistreet vehemently opposed the call arguing that journalists have a “unique role” and supporting could damage the NUJ’s relationship with its sister unions.
