THE Belgian port city of Antwerp was on high alert yesterday after an armed Frenchman sped down a busy shopping street in an apparent attempt to mimic Wednesday’s Westminster attack.
Pedestrians had to jump out of the way of the French-registered car, whose driver was arrested after the vehicle was intercepted at the docks in late morning, said the federal prosecutor’s office.
Authorities said they found knives, a shotgun and a petrol can containing an unknown liquid in the car.
Security levels were raised in the city centre in areas where people often gather.
The incident occurred the day after anniversary commemorations of the Brussels terrorist attacks which killed 35 people, including the three assailants.
The prosecutor’s office said: “Because of these elements, and the events in London yesterday, the case is being taken on by the federal prosecutor’s office,” which usually deals with extremist attacks.
