Wolverhampton 6 Rotherham 4: League-leaders scoop injury time win

by Simon Williams at the Molineux

Former Rotherham loanee Nouha Dicko and Kieran Agard each grabbed a hat-trick as newly promoted Wolves beat promotion-chasing Rotherham 6-4 in front of the biggest crowd at the Molineux for 33 years.

Wolves had to come from behind to draw 3-3 at Rotherham when the two sides met in December with Dicko scoring a brace for the Millers while on loan from Wigan.

And it was the Frenchman, who signed permanently for Wolves from Wigan in January for £300,00, who cancelled out Agard's opener before Dave Edwards struck to put the league leaders 3-1 ahead at the break.

Wolves allowed Rotherham to build up a head of steam in the early stages of the the second-half and Agard capitalised with a neat shot on the turn just after the hour mark.

Dicko completed his hat-trick with 10 minutes of normal time remaining remaining before Joe Skarz scored to give the visitors a glimmer of hope with six minutes left.

Agard then netted his third of the game with two minutes of normal time remaining and looked to have given Rotherham a share of the spoils.

But a beautifully struck 20-yard effort from captain Sam Ricketts and a goal from Kevin McDonald in the seventh minute of injury time sealed the points for the home side as they took another step towards the League One title.

"Our goalscoring was outstanding today with three goals in each half," said Wolves boss Kenny Jackett after the game.

"If you get your finishing and your goalscoring right it covers a multitude of sins. And that's what it did today.

"I didn't think we were anywhere near our best and for long periods I thought Rotherham wanted it more than we did. But we had the finishing quality and were clinical and that's a big asset to have.

"Rotherham are a very good team who keep going all the way through and we did well to win.

"We are on 96 points now but there is still more we want to go for like the title and 100 points."

But the match was marred by some home fans invading the pitch and halting play on three separate occasions, nearly causing referee Frederick Graham to abandon proceedings in the dying embers of the game.

"I don't really know the reasons why there were the pitch invasions. At times you get them at the end of the season but the euphoria spilled over," said Jackett, who attempted to play down the actions of some of the crowd.

"The atmosphere today was fantastic and I would like to thank the fans for coming in terms of the 30,000 attendance and driving us on.

"I don't necessarily know the reasons for it but all I can put it down to is such a high attendance and the fact we are chasing the title.

"There was a lot of enthusiasm and it has just spilled over in the wrong circumstances with the pitch invasions."
