Ritzy Cinema workers call for boycott of Picturehouse chain in fight for London living wage

Cinema workers have called for a boycott of the Picturehouse chain to push bosses to pay the London living wage.

Staff at the south London Ritzy cinema, a Picturehouse subsidiary, kicked off an official boycott campaign following their eighth day of strike action to win an £8.80 an hour wage.

Entertainment union Bectu threw its weight behind the initiative, with spokeswoman Sharon Elliot saying: “The boycott is a reflection of our determination to secure the London Living Wage.”

Concerned customer Ruth Lorimer contacted Picturehouse only to have a spokesperson argue: “Strikes are never a good way to achieve positive outcomes.”

They rejected Ms Lorimer’s suggestion that managers should forego their bonuses so that low-paid staff could get fairer treatment as not “logical.”

Bectu members at the Ritzy will be joining other trade unionists on July 10 in what is set to be the one of the largest strikes in British history.
