Spartak fans banned for monkey chants

Racist abuse directed at Brazilian Hulk

SPARTAK Moscow supporters were banned yesterday from their next away game after “large” numbers racially abused Brazil’s Hulk at the weekend.

The Russian Football Union handed down the judgement after finding that the Zenit St Petersburg forward was the target of repeated monkey chants during Saturday’s game.

Hulk told newspaper Sport Express: “During the game, racist abuse was directed towards me from the Spartak section of the ground.

“I take this as a personal insult for me and my club. I think that such things have absolutely no place and the football powers-that-be must take action in the fight against the occurrence of racial hatred.”

Russian Football Union disciplinary committee chief Artur Grigoryants said the chants could be heard on a video recording but that match officials hadn’t been aware of the chants during the game.

Spartak supporters won’t be allowed to attend the club’s next away game at Ural Yekaterinenburg on October 19.

The racist abuse comes less than a week after Torpedo Moscow were disciplined for supporters’ monkey chants directed at Dynamo Moscow defender Christopher Samba.

A section of the ground will be closed for their next home game on October 25.

But Samba was also hit with a two-match ban for making an obscene gesture towards the fans in response to the abuse.
