A HISTORIAN claimed yesterday that Soviet weapons were stored in caches across Britain during the cold war.
Christopher Andrew was paid by MI5 to study files handed over to British spooks by KGB major Vasili Mitrokhin when he defected from Russia in 1992.
The information, newly made public, includes the precise locations of weapons stored across Europe.
One note giving directions to a stash in Berne, Switzerland reads: “After taking 36 steps, you will be at the point between two large leafy trees, the only ones in the sector.
“The distance between the trees is three paces.
“The area between the trees has been used for the cache.”
No evidence exists of British stores but Mr Andrew claims “it would be remarkable if this tactic wasn’t deployed here.”
He added: “Of course by now they would not be easy to find and it is unlikely the weapons would be serviceable.”
