San Antonio Spurs a game away from NBA victory; Speroni resigns with the Eagles; Tom Daley leads Glasgow diving squad

FOOTBALL: Goalkeeper Julian Speroni has signed a new contract with Crystal Palace, the Premier League side confirmed yesterday.

Argentine Speroni has played more than 300 games for the Eagles since signing from Dundee in 2004.

“This is my home. This is where I always wanted to be, so I’m really pleased,” Speroni said.

“I have been saying for months and months this was always my first choice.”

Speroni helped Palace finish 11th last season.

 

BASKETBALL: San Antonio are a game away from capturing the NBA Championships as they defeated the Miami Heat 107-86 Thursday night.

The win puts them 3-1 up in the series and should they win at home tomorrow it will be their fifth title.

Spurs boss Gregg Popovich knows that his side are one game away from being champions.

He said: “Now we’ve got to go back home and play as well — or better.”

 

ATHLETICS: Tom Daley heads up the England diving squad for the Commonwealth Games which was announced yesterday.

The Olympic medallist and the country’s most high-profile diver is the leading name in the 15-strong squad selected ahead of Glasgow.

“I am really excited about the chance to compete at my second Commonwealth Games,” Daley said. 

Daley won gold four years ago in Delhi four years ago in the 10 metre platform.

 

FOOTBALL: Paris Saint-Germain have announced the signing of Brazil defender David Luiz from Chelsea.

The 27-year-old will join the French champions following the World Cup, where he played in Thursday night’s opener against Croatia in Sao Paulo.

A statement read: “Paris Saint-Germain are pleased to announce that for a period of five years Brazilian international David Luiz has moved from Chelsea FC.”
