Shi'ite rebel forces swept through the central Yemeni city of Adeen yesterday after repelling al-Qaida militants in nearly two weeks of military confrontations.
Al-Qaida had captured the town in Ibb province from the central authorities over the past two weeks but were no match for the rebels known also as Houthis.
Washington asked the United Nations security council on Tuesday to freeze the assets and impose a global travel ban on three figures blamed by the US for orchestrating the current unrest.
The three are former Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh, who is allied to the Houthis, and two Houthi leaders.
The Shi'ite forces are also involved in fighting against al-Qaida in the central town of Radda where at least 30 people were killed on Tuesday. They accuse the national leadership of failing to take the lead in combating al-Qaida and have vowed to send Houthi militias or "people's committees" to fight.
