IRAN has warned against a new nuclear arms race in a thinly veiled attack on recent aggressive US statements.
Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi spoke at a special session on Tuesday marking the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
“Recently we hear [an] alarming announcement by a nuclear-weapon state that it intends to continuously strengthen and expand its nuclear arsenal to ensure its place ‘at the top of the pack’,” Mr Araghchi said.
This was a clear reference to US President Donald Trump’s comment in February that “a dream would be that no country would have nukes, but if countries are going to have nukes, we’re going to be at the top of the pack.”
Mr Araghchi called the US president’s worrying comments “a clear indication of, and an explicit invitation to, the start of a new nuclear arms race.”
UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres said nuclear disarmament “has been subject to numerous challenges” — most recently North Korea’s “provocative nuclear and missile tests.”
