CRASS capitalism has replaced the spirit of protest at London’s Pride festival, LGBT activists complained ahead of today’s march. Fire Brigades Union (FBU) delegate Patrick Carberry said the annual event has been “hijacked and taken over for the purpose of commercialisation.”
The union condemned organisers for undermining the presence of trade unionists in a movement that grew out of protest, adding that multinational corporations are profiting from the event by charging £4.50 for entry.
RMT delegate Alex Grant condemned sponsorship by Virgin Atlantic, which is complicit in the deportation of asylum-seekers, and Deliveroo, which “exploits a vulnerable workforce.”
He added: “LGBT people still suffer from discrimination throughout the world and Pride should be a reminder of our rights, rather than used to sell coffee and credit cards.”
GMB called for collective sponsorship by unions and for London Mayor Sadiq Khan to do more to keep his commitment to bringing Pride back into the community.
PCS delegate Saorse Tweedale said: “Capitalism rules by blunting the edge of the sword of those that are victimised. We cannot allow this to happen to our Pride movement.”
