THREE Scottish education authorities are forking out £32 million a year to private contractors — mainly in interest rates — for building 12 schools, figures revealed yesterday.

South, North and East Ayrshire authorities had schools built under the government’s Public Private Partnership scheme (PPP), under which schools are built using private finance.

Education authorities are then landed with monthly interest payments and a total cost of up to 10 times the cost of the school.

GMB Scotland’s Paul Arkison said: “Many GMB members in Ayrshire have seen their hours of work cut and are worried about their futures, yet this sickening amount of money gets paid to greedy private companies who have no interest or care for the good people of Ayrshire.”
