Congress pays tribute to Bob Crow and Tony Benn

'Two giants of our movement' praised in rousing speech

The national gathering of Scotland’s trade unions paid tribute yesterday to Bob Crow and Tony Benn, calling them “two giants of our movement.”

Speakers offered praise and mourned their passing in an impassioned speech before delegates of the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) in Dundee’s Caird Hall yesterday.

Mr Crow, the militant long-time general secretary of transport union RMT, passed away early last month at the age of 52 after a suspected heart attack, while former Labour minister and tireless anti-war and anti-austerity campaigner Mr Benn died just days later at the age of 88.

STUC president Harry Frew yesterday described the pair as “absolute heroes.”

He said: “Both were vociferous when capitalist power sought to smash workers, their rights and organisations.

“And they fought with all of their intellectual capacity to change this world for the better for working people.

“It is incumbent on all of us to carry on that fight.”

Dundee Trades Union Council secretary Mike Arnott said he had no doubt delegates were “dearly missing” Mr Crow “but welcoming him to this hall in spirit.”
