CHINA accused the US of “undermining” its sovereignity on Thursday night after a US destroyer sailed into its claimed territorial waters surrounding the South China Sea islands.
A US navy official confirmed the destroyer USS John S McCain — named after both the father and grandfather of warmongering senator John McCain — sailed close to the Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said the Chinese navy “identified the US warship, warned and expelled it.”
Mr Geng said the incursion “severely undermines China’s sovereignty and security, and severely endangers the safety of front-line personnel of both sides.
“China has the firm determination to safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime interests,” Mr Geng said, adding the incident will “compel China to take measures to further raise its capacity to defend national territory.”
