LGBT activists must resist Israel’s attempts to paint itself as a haven for gay people, Unison conference heard yesterday.
A successful amendment to a motion on Palestinian solidarity saw LGBT conference delegate Jackie Lewis warn of attempts to “pink-wash” the state in an offensive “specifically intended to undermine the cause of the Palestinian people.”
“There is a large and well-funded campaign to promote the Israeli state as a safe haven for LGBT people,” she said.
“We say: Not in our name. LGBT Palestinians are, like all Palestinians, living under a brutal occupation.”
The conference also resolved to “contribute more” to the campaign for boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel and to work with the union’s pensions unit to assess the potential to press for divestment in the local government pensions fund.
