Rajoy stymied in knife-edge vote

SPAIN: Conservative Peoples’ Party leader Mariano Rajoy was thwarted in his bid to return to power yesterday when the hung parliament narrowly voted against his coalition with the Citizens Party.
MPs voted 180 to 170 against returning the PP government, which has overseen swingeing austerity cuts. Mr Rajoy has a second chance today, needing only a majority.
