IRANIAN President Hassan Rouhani warned the US against reneging on the 2015 atomic energy deal yesterday — saying Tehran’s nuclear programme could be restarted in a day.
In a speech to parliament, Mr Rouhani said Iran could easily resume nuclear research if Washington continues with “threats and sanctions.”
He said: “In an hour and a day, Iran could return to a more advanced level than at the beginning of the negotiations” for the 2015 agreement with the previous US government of Barack Obama.
The deal, to which European powers are also party, recognised Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear energy and lifted sanctions on oil exports in return for guarantees it would not develop nuclear weapons.
But the US maintained other sanctions and added new ones in response to Iran’s non-nuclear missile tests.
President Donald Trump recently suggested Tehran may be declared in breach of the treaty — despite Washington declaring it compliant earlier this year.
