FORMER Glasgow South West MP Ian Davidson was appointed labour movement co-ordinator for the anti-EU Vote Leave campaign yesterday.
Mr Davidson’s appointment is part of a bid to broaden the campaign’s appeal by reducing its domination by the Conservative Party.
It is thought Gisela Stuart, the Labour MP for Edgbaston, will replace former chancellor Nigel Lawson at the head of the group.
“The Leave campaign cannot simply be a reflection of the inside of the Tory Party,” Mr Davidson told the Morning Star.
“It has to be a broad-based campaign promoting a variety of ways we can build a better Britain and a better Europe outside the neoliberal structures of the EU.”
Mr Davidson admitted that he had not expected to return to politics so soon after “retiring by popular demand” at the 2015 general election.
“I planned to spend more time with my family,” he said, “but my family had not been adequately consulted about the matter.”
