Man and woman arrested over homophobic attack

Up to 20 had assaulted man who sang show tune on the tram

A MAN and a woman were arrested yesterday over a homophobic attack in which up to 20 people punched and kicked a man unconscious.

The assault took place in Manchester following a row between the 25-year-old victim and another man while they were on a tram in the early hours of Saturday November 1.

The victim, named locally as Jean Claude Manseau, and a friend were reportedly subjected to bigoted taunts after the pair sang show tunes on board the tram.

In the wake of the incident, hundreds of people, led by the Manchester Lesbian and Gay Chorus, took part in a mass singalong on the trams as a protest.

Police said yesterday that a 20-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of a homophobically aggravated assault and are being questioned in custody.
