UN rejects claims of 'shocking indifference' to South Sudan refugees made by Doctors Without Borders

Officials call allegations by Medicine Sans Frontieres of the UN's 'shocking indifference' to refugees in South Sudan 'unnecessary and unhelpful'

The United Nations hit back yesterday at claims it was showing “shocking indifference” to those sheltering in its South Sudan camps.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said about 21,000 people in Juba were “living in flood water contaminated with faecal matter.”

More than a million people have fled their homes since fighting broke out between the government and former allies in the ruling party.

UN official Toby Lanzer said that MSF’s “attack” was “unnecessary and unhelpful.

“This is a base which was not created or planned for such an influx of people who need to stay alive and stay alive they have.”

He said the UN had provided water and sanitation.

“Everybody knew that flooding could be an issue, that there would be a public health risk and actually we welcome the MSF into the base.”
