PACIFIC rim nations failed to reach agreement yesterday on a replacement for the free trade deal killed off by US President Donald Trump in January.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was set to chair a meeting of the 11 remaining nations in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) at the Apec summit in Da Nang, Vietnam.
“It was said that it is not at a stage where [the agreement] can be confirmed at the summit level,” Mr Abe said after meeting his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau.
Mr Trudeau stayed away from the meeting that most other leaders attended. No official reason was given, but days earlier the Canadian leader warned his country would not be rushed into a deal.
