Aberdeen council tenants warned over 'dodgy' electrical work

Electricians may have been unqualified agency staff, say unions Ucatt and Unite

Unions warned council tenants in Aberdeen yesterday that electrical work at their homes may have been done by unqualified agency workers.

Construction unions Ucatt and Unite have been pressing the city council about the issue for eight months.

The council denied the claim at first but the unions forced it to carry out checks on agency staff in March, leading to the removal of seven people with questionable electrical qualifications.

But Ucatt and Unite are concerned about the standard of work agency staff have done over the past few years.

They may have also worked on electrics at Aberdeen schools.

Both unions are now calling for a fully independent audit of how the council awards work to subcontractors.
