Mehdi Mustafa Wadi murder branded 'treachery' by Iraqi communists

Activist was gunned down outside his Mosul home amid democracy campaign

The Iraqi Communist Party condemned yesterday the murder of its activist Mehdi Mustafa Wadi, accusing the “hands of treachery and crime” of his assassination.

Mr Wadi was shot in front of his house in Mosul at the weekend while involved in the Civil Democratic Alliance election campaign.

The party’s political committee praised his “consistent defence of working people and their aspirations,” citing his recent involvement in a play to celebrate the party’s 80th anniversary.

Civil Democratic Alliance leader Dr Ali al-Ruafai’i attacked “this criminal act in Nineveh province, targeting the patriotic voice represented by the Civil Democratic Alliance.”

Dr Ruafai’i said that “the existence of the alliance in the political arena is viewed with hostility by some who want to maintain the political status quo and fear the emergence of a new force that confronts corruption and sectarianism.”

He called on the authorities to protect the lives of citizens and the candidates contesting the April 30 parliamentary elections.

The Communist Party announced in December that it would contest this month’s elections within the Civil Democratic Alliance.

However, political committee member Jassim al-Hilfi told the party’s daily paper Tareeq al-Shaab that the party “remains part of the Democratic Current which took part in the provincial elections earlier this year and won 11 seats.”

“These democratic politicians have not been tarnished by corruption and shedding the blood of Iraqis and are known for their integrity, competence and support for the civil democratic alternative,” he stressed.
