Arsenal v Napoli preview: Arsene Wenger plays down talk of title charge

Gunners manager says team are taking one game at a time following promising start, writes Greg Leedham

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes it is “absolutely ridiculous” to talk about his team as potential Premier League winners.

The Gunners currently top the domestic table following Saturday’s win over Swansea, but Wenger, whose side host Rafa Benitez’s Napoli in the Champions League on Tuesday evening, wants his players to stay grounded for the time being.

The Frenchman has no fresh injury concerns ahead of the visit of the Serie A side, though Czech playmaker Tomas Rosicky is fit again and could return to the squad. “You believe 100 per cent or you don’t believe, so that is how much our belief (in the title) is,” said Wenger, whose side won their Champions League opener against Marseille two weeks ago.

“In our job the most important thing is to have a good balance between ambition and humility — ambition because of course we want to win (the league), but humility as well because we know we have only played six games and to speak today about the title is absolutely ridiculous.

“What we have done is to continue to have the same ambition and I think the team has a good humility level and is conscious that we want to improve.”

Napoli defeated last year’s runners-up Borussia Dortmund in their opening fixture of Group F and Wenger is not taking the Italians lightly.

“We are in a tough group. If you look at the teams Marseille, Dortmund and Napoli, they all play at the top of their league and in big football countries, so you feel of course for us it is vital to continue our run and to come out of the group,” said Wenger.

Wenger, too, will come face to face with a player he nearly signed over the summer — Gonzalo Higuain, who eventually swapped Real Madrid for Napoli, having been on the brink of a move to Ashburton Grove. The forward has scored four times so far this term for his new club.
