Anti-fascists outnumber 'Tommy Robinson' supporters at London rally

ANTI-FASCISTS mobilised in London yesterday to see off a feeble demonstration by supporters of jailed criminal Stephen Yaxley-Lennon.

Mr Yaxley-Lennon, who uses the name Tommy Robinson, is serving a prison sentence for contempt of court by broadcasting outside Leeds Crown Court during a child grooming trial.

His actions jeopardised the case against defendants.

But a rag-tag assortment of fascist groups are calling for his release from Belmarsh Prison.

Around 100 of them gathered on Saturday for a demonstration outside the BBC in London.

They were outnumbered by around 250 anti-fascists, who staged a counter-protest in Oxford Circus.

The anti-fascists marched on to the Polish embassy in solidarity with Polish LGBT+ rights campaigners who were holding a vigil there in protest against persecution in Poland.

Stand Up to Racism co-convener Weyman Bennett said: “Today was another important mobilisation by anti-racists and anti-fascists, and those opposing the rise in far-right attacks including on the LGBT+ community.

“It was another example of how the far-right movement that had rallied behind Robinson in the past year is now in disarray, splitting and humiliated.

“Around this time last year, we had to face up to the horror of 15,000 supporters of fascist Robinson rampaging through London.

“It was a major challenge to anti-racists everywhere to turn around this situation.”
