Former SNP official calls for inquiry into party's handling of transphobic behaviour

A FORMER elected SNP official has called for an independent inquiry into the party’s handling of transphobic behaviour.

Ex-branch official Emma Cuthbertson accused some within the party of treating the abuse of trans people as “acceptable collateral damage to maintain party unity.”

Ms Cuthbertson said she was the victim of transphobic abuse from SNP members, including MSPs and MPs.

The campaigner, now a Scottish Greens member, said she has reported 21 instances of transphobia to SNP national secretary Angus MacLeod and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, which she says have gone unanswered.

Ms Cuthbertson, along with Green colleagues, called for an independent inquiry to take place.

“A party in government who claim to be progressive and welcoming, and who claim to want a progressive independent Scotland, have deliberately stood back and watched as a vulnerable minority have been vilified and persecuted within their own party,” she said.

The SNP was approached for comment.
