Labour slams SNP over mounting inequality

THE SNP government was accused of complacency yesterday over persistent health inequalities in Scotland.

Statistics published yesterday show that the poorest 10 per cent of Scots are four times more likely to die young than those in the richest 10 per cent.

The government’s own Long-term Monitoring of Health Inequalities report said that “significant health inequalities” exist in a variety of indicators.

Scots in deprived areas are also 52 per cent more likely to die from a stroke.

Scottish Labour said that the shameful record of worsening inequality is the result of years of Tory austerity which has not been mitigated enough by the SNP.

Scottish Labour MSP Monica Lennon said: “This is a result of years of complacency from SNP ministers and lack of investment in our communities — and must be a wake-up call to [Scottish Health Secretary Jeane Freeman] to ramp up efforts across government to end these shameful health inequalities.”

Public Health Minister Joe FitzPatrick said: “We remain focused on addressing the underlying causes that drive health inequalities, which has income inequality at its heart.”
