Jailed Kurdish leader affirms commitment to struggle

JAILED Kurdish opposition MP Leyla Guven said she would “continue to resist and struggle” despite being unable to attend the funeral of her mother who died last week.

Ms Guven has been on hunger strike for 62 days in protest at the isolation of imprisoned Kurdistan Workers’ Party leader Abdullah Ocalan.

Her condition has deteriorated and her lawyers said she was only able to see for short periods during their last three visits, suffering nausea, weakness, headaches, stomach cramps and increased sensitivity to light and sound.

She penned an open letter to her mother, saying it was her who gave her the courage and inspiration to resist.

“Isolation is a crime against humanity, war is a crime against humanity,” she wrote. “I’m resisting that it doesn’t happen any more. You taught me to resist the injustices, not to bow down, to be courageous, to speak and do right. All of your teachings are so precious, Mum.

“You’ve suffered a lot like all the Kurdistan mothers, but you didn’t even say one day. We understand the sanctity of motherhood through you.

“I will continue to resist and struggle to be worthy of you and all mothers. Be heaven in space, sleep in the lights, my mother.”
