Industry Victory for British train building

THE announcement of two new rail contracts was hailed as a “victory” today for those who have been fighting to save train building in Britain.

Derby’s Bombardier has secured two contracts worth over half a billion pounds to build and repair train carriages for West Midland Trains and the C2C franchise.

Rail union RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “This is a victory for the workforce who have fought and battled through years of uncertainty to secure a future for train building in Britain, the nation that gave the railways to the world.”

In October, Litchurch Lane firm, a consortium made up of Dutch national operator Abellio, the East Japan Railway Company and Mitsui and Co, was announced as the preferred bidder.

RMT said the deal would provide safeguards and job security for directly employed staff and vindicated its “Battle for Bombardier” campaign which the union launched in 2011.

“We now need to get away from the peaks and troughs business cycle and plan for a secure future for train building in Britain,” Mr Cash added.
