Workers at Drax power station hold strike ballot over redundancies

WORKERS at Drax power station in north Yorkshire have begun balloting on a call for strike action against redundancies.

Unite, which represents 600 workers there, said that 230 of them face compulsory redundancy.

Energy-generation company Drax has converted two of the station’s generators from coal to other fuels and is in the process of converting the third.

Unite regional officer Shane Sweeting said: “The management has continually failed to live up to the terms of last year’s pay agreement, when they stated verbally that there would be no compulsory redundancies amongst the workforce.

“Our members, who worked flat out through the pandemic, have even offered to take a pay and bonus freeze to improve redundancy terms and maintain jobs, but that was rejected by the bosses.”

A Drax spokeswoman said: “Drax has never said there would be no compulsory redundancies and we are working hard to reduce that number.

"A joint statement agreed with Unite in February, when we announced we would be stopping using coal in March 2021, bears testament to this.”
