400 claim unfair dismissal against ministry

Friday 27 January 2012

Nearly 400 employees have claimed unfair dismissal by the government's biggest-spending department since the coalition took office.

There have been 389 applications for unfair dismissal tribunal hearings against the Department for Work and Pensions since June 2010, according to figures released yesterday by Employment Minister Chris Grayling.

A flurry of claims were lodged with the department towards the end of last year, with a total of 154 between August and the end of December, and a rate of almost two a day in September (59 in total).

The figures were released in response to a written parliamentary question by Harrow West Labour MP Gareth Thomas on Thursday.

Editorial

No sense of shame

If Liam Fox, the disgraced former minister forced to resign just four months ago for his inability to distinguish between government responsibilities and personal interests, had any sense of shame, he would maintain a dignified silence.
