We had our own queen

Wednesday 13 June 2012

I am tired of monarchists who incessantly ask "Who would want the likes of Bush or Tony Blair as president?"

We have only to look at our near Irish neighbours to give us a better model than the hereditary monarchy - and peerage.

The recent election of Michael Higgins cheered many of us on the left but we can also look back at such distinguished holders of the office such as Mary Robinson.

To cheer us all, in one small corner of this mediaeval state an anti-jubilee party was organised by local republicans as a fund raiser for CND.

There our own Queen Elizabeth aka Betty Tebbs (known to many readers of the Morning Star), suitably dressed complete with red gloves and cardboard crown with two fingers atop appropriately raised, delivered a brilliant satirical speech to indicate what lay ahead with this coalition government - privatisation of all health, welfare and education services, taxes for the poor, aid for the rich, more wars....

We laughed - but we were scared.

It will certainly take all the energies and determination of the likes of Betty to rid ourselves of this dangerous, oppressive regime.
