Man charged for hospital arsons

CRIME: A man has been charged by detectives investigating a series of arson attacks on hospitals and other public buildings in Kent and Yorkshire.

Thomas Ashcroft, 34, of no fixed address, is accused of starting blazes at the Medway Maritime Hospital and Kent and Canterbury Hospital in Kent and the Hilton Hotel in Sheffield.

Kent Police said he was charged on Saturday with three counts of arson with intent and three counts of burglary.

21 stranded whales die on Fife coast

SCOTLAND: More than 20 whales have died in a mass stranding off the coast of Fife, Scottish coastguards said today.

Some were already dead when animal rescue teams arrived on the scene at Pittenweem, near St Andrews, and several had to be put down.

Nine of the 30 stranded pilot whales were being kept alive today by vets from British Divers and Marine Life Rescue, with help from the emergency services.

Man arrested for village murder

CRIME: Detectives investigating the murder of a woman found dead in her home by firefighters in East Cheshire have arrested a 47-year-old man.

Diana Lee was found with head injuries in her home in Byley Lane, Cranage, on August 9.
