Million workers forced to take part time jobs

Tuesday 04 September 2012

The TUC warned yesterday that the recession has forced a million more people into taking part-time jobs because they can't find full-time work.

It said there are 3.3 million such people in Britain, up 42 per cent since 2008.

"Underemployment," as this is known, also makes the government's unemployment figures look more rosy than they perhaps should.

Overall, more than one in 10 workers are not doing enough hours to get by. For women the figure is worse at one in eight.

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said young people, women and low-skilled workers were worst affected.

"It is alarming just how few young people today are able to find a job working enough hours," he said.

"This is a criminal waste of the talent and skills they have - all because of a crisis they didn't cause."
