Join our march: Remploy staff urge public support

Sixty workers at the Chesterfield factory struck on Monday along with the workforce of the Remploy factory at Springburn in Glasgow.

The Chesterfield workers voted by 93 per cent to strike and the action is 100 per cent solid. The workers are mainly members of the general union GMB. Unite members are also involved in the nationwide struggle.

The two factories face an uncertain future. The government is shutting 27 Remploy factories employing 1,700 disabled people. Some of the factories face privatisation but the Chesterfield and Springburn workers have been kept in the dark about their future.

A spokesman for Chesterfield and District Trades Union Council said: "With more than 2.6 million people on the dole, the government's claim that sacked Remploy workers will be able to get jobs in the 'mainstream' is nothing but a sick joke.

"Chesterfield Remploy workers are taking strike action to defend their jobs and working conditions and they need our support. Come along on the march on Saturday."

nThe march assembles at 12.30pm at Chesterfield Town Hall. Speakers include Remploy union representatives, Toby Perkins MP, Chesterfield Council leader John Burrows and others.
