Private firms 'worse than public sector'

Only one five of us think that private firms do things better than the public sector - and more than half think they do it worse.

That's the verdict of ordinary people despite the relentless march of privatisation since Thatcher that has continued under new Labour and now David Cameron.

The huge thumbs-up for democratic control of our services was revealed in research commissioned by public-sector union Unison.

It found massive support from voters across the political spectrum for limits on the profits of firms that are being paid by the taxpayer.

Unison general secretary Dave Prentis called for a public inquiry into privatisation.
